So apparently our interested in Felipe Melo has ended purely because he's signed a new contract. Let me tell you, that doesn't necessarily mean anything. Firstly, Melo has only signed a one year extension. Who only signs for an extra year unless they're over 30? One year is hardly commiting yourself to your club in the long-term. The only reason Melo signed a new contract was because Fiorentina wanted a 'buy-out clause' on him. To add something like that, a new contract must be signed, and the minimum extension possible is one year. Melo's contract didn't have a buy-out clause before, so surely Fiorentina moving to ensure he has one plainly means they expect bids to come in. Also, we were going to have to spend money on him anyway. It's not like Melo was previously available on a free before signing his extension. It may indeed be the case that we give up on Melo, but it won't be purely because he's signed a new contract.
Our attentions have also turned to Lorik Cana. Tabloids have sweeping headlines such as: 'Arsenal turn to Tottenham target Cana.' Thus trying to make us look embarrassed by missing out on one potential target and having to turn to a player that our arch-rivals want. As if they saw him first. Several years ago Wenger wanted to get Cana on a trial but Cana unfortunately couldn't obtain a work permit. Now he's been playing in France for several years as well as playing every game for Albania, he would be able to get one. This, coupled with the fact that Marseille seem resigned to losing him, may mean this is the most opportune moment to swoop in and get ourselves a tough defensive midfielder.
Right that's all for now.
'Til later Gooners.
